Overview:
This position is responsible for providing exceptional customer service in a friendly and professional manner and for creating a positive Library experience, primarily at the Kid City Help Desk. Qualified candidates will be prepared to enthusiastically assist patrons in a busy indoor play space. This position will have a focus on children’s collection development.
Essential Job Duties:
- Maintain assigned children’s collection areas including ordering, weeding, marketing, and merchandising.
- Provide friendly and professional customer service on the telephone, in person, and when using electronic communication at the Kid City Help Desks. Accurately respond to patron questions.
- Comfortably oversee an indoor play space that includes a slide and interactive elements.
- Regularly clean and tidy the public floor including toy cleanup, wiping down play elements, and encouraging a safe and welcoming play space.
- Effectively resolve patron misunderstandings or complaints.
- Provide reader’s advisory assistance.
- Provide catalog, online database and one-on-one device instruction to patrons.
- Troubleshoot library equipment and communicate outages to appropriate personnel.
- Comfortably use and explain how to use technology.
- Participate in RAILS and other networking groups.
- Demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills, flexibility and sound and independent judgment.
- Work productively in a fast-paced team environment without direct supervision.
- Represent the Library’s brand by providing a positive image at all times.
- Ensure all policies of the Wauconda Area Public Library are followed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, and individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Comfort with public interactions, in individual or group settings. Ability to deal courteously, diplomatically and relate to individuals of various backgrounds.
- Ability to adapt to constant change with patience, tact and professionalism.
- Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
Education and Experience Required:
- High School Diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Prior experience with collection development in a library or school setting preferred.
- A minimum of 2 years of public library, school, daycare, or related work experience with a children’s focus.
Hours:
Wednesdays 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Thursdays 1:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Fridays 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
1 assigned Saturday per month 8:45 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
1 assigned Sunday per month 11:45 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Rate:
$17.50 - $20.00/hour, depending on qualifications. Includes IMRF benefits, pro-rated vacation and holiday pay if working qualifying hours.
